Dusty - Original Oil Painting

'The sun was sinking low over the Australian scrub, turning the sky the colour of old roses. Out beyond the rusted fence line stood a lone Brumby, His Chestnut mane lifting in the evening wind. He had spent his life running wild, crossing dry creek beds and red earth beneath endless skies. But that evening, something had changed. The wind carried the smell of rain, and far off, thunder rolled across the ranges. Dusty turned toward the hills. Behind him lay the open stock paddocks; ahead, the wild country. For a moment he stood perfectly still, his ears pricked toward the sound.

Then he galloped.

His hooves struck the earth like gunfire as he raced through the tall grass. Dusty knew these hills. He slipped between the gums, climbed the rocky slopes and into the purple dusk. By the time the storm broke, Dusty was standing alone on the ridge. Lightning flashed across the sky. For one brief moment, the whole country was bright as day—the scrub, the mountains, the rain, and the wild Brumby standing proud against it all. 

Dusty lowered his head and walked into the storm, as free and wild as the Outback itself.'
